Executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Michael Chabon, supervising producer Kirsten Beyer, and director Hanelle M. Culpepper provide commentary about episode one of Star Trek: Picard.

The co-creators and Patrick Stewart discuss bringing the iconic character back to the screen, including what was compelling enough to warrant it and the obstacles they had to overcome to make it so.

Spectacular — yet all to brief — behind-the-scenes footage of Hanelle Culpepper directing the series premiere of ‘Picard,’ a character that she says she has loved “as much as any Trekkie out there,” so she “definitely felt that pressure.” Executive producer Alex Kurtzman calls her “wildly prepared,” as well as “meditative and thoughtful,” in discussing how she perfectly filled the role as director for the series’ first three episodes.

A hodge-podge of information vignettes only tangentially tied to the episode “Maps and Legends,” and includes interviews with Michael Chabon, Eugene Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Heather Kadin. The strength of the piece is the quick dissection of actor Harry Treadwell and the ambiguity he brought to the role of Narek.

A beautiful and mostly first-person account from showrunner Michael Chabon detailing his time filming on location at Vasquez Rocks, obviously one of the most iconic destinations in ‘Star Trek’ history. Chabon speaks with reverence about the experience and breaks down the meta decision to make Vasquez Rocks canon by making it Raffi’s home on earth.

Mostly a piece about Jonathan Frakes directing the standout episode, but the most interesting parts of the vignette include details on Evan Evagora’s debut as Elnor. The piece includes snippets of his audition tapes and the actor discussing his casting process, as well as memories from Patrick Stewart on the “tough” way the director mentored the young Australian actor.

More from Frakes and a focus on Jeri Ryan’s return as Seven of Nine, but the behind-the-scenes look is most effective with show creator Kirsten Beyer discussing the hard choices the production team had to make in guiding Seven’s difficult story back to the screen — most notably focusing on the episodes shocking first moments and Seven’s decisions that close out the story. And if you ever needed to know the origin of BJayzl’s name, Akiva Goldsman is here to tell that story!

It’s always great to hear from voices you don’t get a lot of access to — and in one of the highlights of the collection’s bonus material, this feature includes a great first person account from Nick Zayas, who wrote the episode. He goes into great detail on the Zhal Makh and the filming of the pivotal scene in which Soji’s secrets are finally revealed to Narek. The vignette is a great exploration on how the series enhanced Romulan culture.

The first half of this piece is nothing new and focuses on necessary, if not repetitive, soundbites about Frakes’ return to acting and the decision to introduce some legacy characters to the series — which was never part of the original plan. However, the second half of this feature is a standout, with more interviews with Culpepper and behind-the-scenes footage of Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes on the set together during the filming of “Remembrance.” Amazing stuff.

The only vignette featuring call-out interviews and moments from Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Rios (Santiago Cabrera) and Jurati (Alison Pill). Those moments are great, but a little fleeting. More please.

Very interesting look at the unique filming location for Coppelius Station, which was a remote house in the hills of Malibu with limited access. The short piece also includes Brent Spiner discussing his latest version of a Soong, as well as Akiva Goldsman getting into details on his directing style.

As you might expect, a piece focused solely on the death and new life of Jean-Luc Picard, with Chabon, Kurtzman, Stewart and Spiner all discussing the narrative choices the production team made. As Alex Kurtzman says: “One of the things that Trek has taught me is that it continues to endure if you take bold swings. But you can only take bold swings if you are really, really thoughtful about why you are doing and if you are honoring both the spirit of Star Trek and what everyone loves about those characters.”

A look inside the creative process behind the xBs of Star Trek: Picard, alongside Lead Creature Designer Neville Page, Vincent Van Dyke, and his prosthetics studio team, as well as Make-Up and Prosthetics Department Head James MacKinnon about the process from start to stage.

Property Master Jeff Lombardi takes fans on a tour of the many props created for Season One of Star Trek: Picard.

Production Designer Todd Cherniawsky serves as the tour guide for the main stages of Star Trek: Picard, including La Sirena, Picard's study and the Borg Cube. Cherniawsky, Supervising Art Director Iain McFadyen, and Set Decorator Lisa Alkofer also discuss the various designs for the show.

Working outside of Starfleet, Picard gathers his crew from across the galaxy. This special feature takes a look at the actors and characters that will travel aboard La Sirena.

The feature explores the genesis of the new Stargazer starship, all the way from early Zoom design calls between Terry Matalas, Doug Drexler, John Eaves, Dave Blass, and Star Trek Online‘s Thomas Marrone — all the way through the interior sets on the production stages with input from Mike Okuda, and the designers of the various LCARS user interfaces seen on the ship. There’s a fantastic amount of insight in this feature, from concept designs and blueprints to the wildly-complicated set construction efforts used to bring the Stargazer bridge to life.

Production designer Dave Blass and prop master Jeff Lombardi guide viewers through the design and contents of the Chateau Picard set (a new build for Season 2), used in both the 2401 and 2024 time periods. Neville Page also lays out the design philosophy behind ‘Borgslayer’ Picard’s alien skull collection, in a deep exploration of those artifact.

The primary overview the year, featuring cast interviews and writer-producer discussions around the Picard backstory, time-travel, Q, and Borg Queen elements which make up Season 2’s storytelling.

As you might imagine, this feature focuses on prop master Jeff Lombardi’s work for Season 2, touching on the various weapons and costume pieces built for the dark Confederation future, along with the tech of Adam Soong and Tallinn found in 2024. Lombardi offers a great look at some concept art and production-made pieces from Season 2, including the design thoughts behind the sharp Confederation combadge, Romulan tricorder, and Guinan’s El-Aurian bottle.

John de Lancie, Patrick Stewart, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman discuss Q’s return, and the character’s impact on Jean-Luc Picard in both past and present encounters. There’s also a great look at de Lancie’s final day on set with Patrick Stewart, as the actor recounts how his Next Generation journey began all the way back during preparation for “Encounter at Farpoint.”

Lead creature designer Neville Page (along with other artists in the Picard team) describes the challenge of bringing back the intimidating Borg Queen with the makeup and prosthetic technology now available to Trek creatives, along with actor Annie Wersching’s experience becoming the cybernetic villain.

The sometimes-all-to-serious characters fall away as the fun Star Trek: Picard cast get to have a few laughs while trying to film on noisy Los Angeles city streets — or just having trouble remembering the right Trek talk as they work to deliver complicated line reading.
